The primary purpose of this position is to support the maintenance and repair of district facilities and building systems by performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks in multiple trades. This position is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and structural systems, as well as responding to service requests in a timely and safe manner. The General Maintenance Technician works both independently and collaboratively to ensure district buildings remain functional, safe, and well-maintained for students, staff, and community stakeholders.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Valid Illinois Driver's License required. Technical training, trade school coursework, or certification in a building maintenance trade preferred. Bilingual - Spanish/English - written/verbal (preferred).
Experience/Knowledge:
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building maintenance or related trades preferred. Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing building systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry, adhering to safety procedures and practices. Ability to operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and building system equipment. Knowledge of basic arithmetic, terminology, and craft skills, including shop and system mathematical calculations common to the building maintenance trade preferred. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively and effectively with adults, students and community members. Basic computer knowledge. Proficient in Microsoft Office, work order management, and computerized maintenance management systems. Ability to communicate verbally and successfully complete written documentation in English.
Physical Demands:
Ability to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, climb stairs, and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to lift in excess of 75 lbs. with proper technique. Ability to work safely from stepladder, aerial lifts, and/or scaffolding at varying heights, up to 60 ft. Ability to push/pull 100 pounds with proper technique. Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather for prolonged periods.
Terms of Employment:
This is a 12-month ESSO position. Salary and benefits are as established by the agreement between ESSO and the Board of Education. Flexibility in work days/hours and overtime may be required. A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required on the mandatory practical application test. ( T-F 2:30pm to 11pm and Sat 8am-4:30pm) Starting salary is $25.11/hr.
